Screen printing, or silk screening, is the process of printing graphics on a t-shirt using thick inks that lay on top of the shirt material — it's what most companies use to decorate shirts. Essentially we create a stencil using light-sensitive material that lets us take images from a digital source and burn them into a frame. Using special ink, we apply the image onto almost any fabric. Screen printing uses one color at a time (unless you use split-fountain to create gradients), so colors must be chosen wisely during design — which is why we highly encourage using our graphics department for a successful print.
Yes — but really, no. We recommend at least one dozen (12 shirts) or two dozen (24) to start your first run. Printing a single shirt isn't recommended: set-up and break-down take far longer than the print itself, and screen set-up fees make one shirt expensive to produce.
Our presses have six color heads, so we can print up to six colors on a shirt. There are also methods like CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) that work like a computer printer — combining and overlapping four colors to create any color, which works great on light shirts. Simulated process printing uses a limited palette to build a wide range of colors with depth (think a lion in yellows, tans, browns, and golds) and works beautifully on dark shirts.
We use a tiered pricing system. The more shirts you order, the lower the per-shirt cost. More colors raise the per-shirt price, and larger prints cost more — the same is true for embroidery. For screen printing we charge a screen set-up of $15 per screen. Fill out a quote on our Custom Quotes page for a specialized price for your situation.
